EFA remembers Sargent Shriver, first director of the Peace Corps

Submitted by EFA International on January 18, 2011Add Comment

EFA International celebrates the life of Sargent Shriver, the man who brought JFK’s vision for the United States Peace Corps to life. He passed away today at the age of 95. It was through the Peace Corps that EFA’s founders had the opportunity to work in Northern Cameroon and develop programs to address HIV/AIDS and other community health issues. We salute Sargent Shriver for his vast contributions to the American people and to the world. The Peace Corps celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, with more than 200,000 volunteers having served worldwide.

For more information about Sargent Shriver’s role in starting the Peace Corps, please visit the organization’s online tribute.
